Natural Remedies for Dark Spots

Over-the-counter fade creams and dark spot erasers can often be expensive and harsh on the skin. So why not just use all-natural items that you can find right in your kitchen cabinet? These five items are not only inexpensive, but they are the best remedies for treating dark spots naturally.


Raw, organic honey is one of the best ways to fade dark spots and even your skin tone. Honey’s natural bleaching properties make it the perfect and simplest dark spot remover around. Simply make a mask with the honey by spreading an even, thin layer across the face once a day for 20 minutes to an hour. This mask will not only help reduce the scars, but clear the acne as well, due to its anti-bacterial properties.


Organic turmeric powder is a great product for evening skin tone. In India, this spice is often used as part of a beauty ritual for brides-to-be. A mask made of chickpea flour, milk, and turmeric is applied to the face of the bride before her wedding to give her healthy, glowing skin. Turmeric can also be mixed with honey to create a mask that will bleach spots and heal existing acne. Simply mix ingredients until they form a paste and leave on for 15-20 minutes.


Plain yogurt is filled with probiotics and the good bacteria that your body and skin needs to thrive. Making a mask with this item is not only soothing, but it promotes cell turnover, due to the lactic acid found in yogurt. Turmeric or honey can be added to this mask along with cinnamon to help fight acne and treat dark spots. A plain yogurt mask can be left on the face for an hour or overnight for optimum benefits. If adding additional ingredients, leave on for 15-20 minutes.


The acidity in lemons makes this small fruit a great option for peeling off dead skin cells to reveal newer, brighter skin. This fruit can be used several ways to help treat dark spots. One method is by squeezing the juice of half a lemon into a cup and using a q-tip to apply to affected areas. Leave on for 10-15 minutes then rinse with warm water. Lemon juice can also be used a toner by diluting the juice with equal parts of water and applying it to the skin with a cotton ball. Lemon juice can also be mixed with yogurt and used as a mask. This method is good for those with sensitive skin.


Pumpkin is filled with vitamin A and natural enzymes that help to treat acne and reveal brighter skin. Pumpkin helps to slough off old, dead skin cells to fade dark spots and promote glowing skin. Adding cinnamon to this mask will not only make your face smell like pumpkin pie, but it will help to eliminate acne. Simply smooth the mashed pumpkin across the face and allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes.
