Oily skin: how I dealt with it
By: Wafi Habib
Oily skin: the one thing in life that seemed impossible to get rid of when I was a young teenage boy entering the awkward stages of puberty. And it didn’t help that I fitted the ‘oily skin’ criteria: Asian? Check. Lives on the equator? Check. Going through puberty? Check. Screwed? Check.
It plagued my life no matter what I was doing. Whenever I woke up, my face was drenched in oil and if you managed to touch it you would notice how briskly your fingers slid off the surface of my skin…yeah, nasty! Even when I was in an air conditioned room my face was spewing oil faster than the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.
I tried many things to try and tackle this problem. I washed my face and applied a moisturizer twice a day - oil would still accumulate. I tried to scrub my face with a strong cleanser - oil would still accumulate. I even tried the so-called ‘magical’ blotting paper that many people swear by. I thought I had found the cure and I thought my skin was going to change for the better! It was too good to be true…it most definitely was. It did the exact opposite and it made my skin oilier. And upon researching I found out that if you removed your natural oils too much, your face would produce even more to replenish and make up for it…at that point I was highly annoyed and I was close to giving up. But my mother managed to get her hands on a cream that she found in our local drugstore: benzoyl peroxide.
Upon handing it to me, the first thing I did was go straight to my room and do some research before I applied it on my face. I didn’t want to make the same mistake I did with the blotting paper. I found a range of different opinions that went from “it made my skin feel so much better” to “it made my skin feel like the Sahara desert” but I still went ahead, took the risk and applied it all over the oily sections of my face. I thought it would sting but it didn’t…in fact there was no pain at all. Whether this was a good sign or not was not apparent to me.
I did this right before I went to sleep and the next morning when I woke up, I expected to feel the oil oozing off my face but to my surprise, I couldn’t. My face felt cool and breezy; a feeling that I had never felt before. I looked in the mirror to see that the shine had been reduced immensely. No dry skin, no oily skin, just a natural sheen. And from then on, I never stopped using this miracle cream.
If you are reading this and you have oily skin and you don’t know what else to do, try using a benzoyl peroxide cream. Start with 5% first and if that doesn’t do much then upgrade to 10%. And just apply it like a normal cream; it’s as easy as that. I hope that this article was helpful and I pray that all of you with oily skin can conquer this demon once and for all; like how I did.
