The ‘No-Dairy’ diet

For a long period of my life I never really made anything of the saying “you are what you eat” because I loved food and I couldn’t be bothered to watch what I ate back then. I used to go by my own motto which was “don’t read your food” which referred to people that would always check the ingredients and nutrition facts before they ate or bought some food; I lived with that for the first 15 years of my life.

It wasn’t until quite recently I met someone who had amazing skin. I stared at them and there was no wrinkle, scar or pore visible (at least with the human eye). I would stare at their flawless skin just wondering how it got to be as clear as it did. Until eventually, I just straight out asked them: how did you get your skin to be so flawless? That person stared at me and smiled and simply uttered the words: I quit dairy. Ever since then, my life has never been the same.

I did some extensive research to see what exactly it is that dairy does to us because just like you at this moment, I was skeptical. But what I found really disgusted me up to the point that I actually threw my leftover milk into the trash bin right after. So let me explain to you what it was that I found:

There is a high demand for milk around the world. And in order for us to get the milk we need cows, a lot of them. But how will they do this in such a short amount of time? Easy: artificial cow hormones. The people that grow the cows will make them ingest these hormones so they can grow faster which means there can be a higher quantity of milk which means there will be a higher quantity of money. However, these artificial cow hormones don’t just disappear in their bodies. They instead (are you ready?) are excreted out in the urine, feces or even better, their milk…

Let that sink in for a while.

And if that is still confusing you, let me break it down some more. We have been drinking artificial cow hormones…and it is these hormones, that once in our body, will spread around and clog your pores therefore causing (you guessed it) acne and all that other nastiness…got milk?

So now I’m just going to briefly summarize for you guys what I consume to substitute the calcium loss. First of all, I now drink almond milk and hazelnut milk. I also use these when I eat cereal. They both contain a good amount of calcium, vitamin D and riboflavin; all of which are good for your teeth and bones. Secondly, I have quit eating food with cheese in it such as pizza (which was really hard to quit because…well it’s pizza that’s why) and other sorts of pasta. And finally, I have also started ‘reading my food’ (yeah I know, my motto at the beginning has been completely demolished). I always check the allergy information to make sure there is no milk in the food I consume. So overall, quitting dairy products really is not as hard as you think. But then again, just like with all these diets, it’s all up to you.
