Following my decision to start cleansing with more natural products, I came upon the cleansing oil method. Previously I washed my face twice a day with a mild soap and moisturized after with Cetaphil.
But for dry summer days in California, Cetaphil did not even penetrate my skin at all. I still had flakes and redness on the sides of my nose and the sides of my mouth, where it would be painful to even move my face. I felt like a scaly lizard!
I was initially wary of the oil cleansing method. If my face was already greasy, how would slapping more oil on my face solve the problem? The objective of oil cleansing is to balance the skin’s natural oils instead of stripping them away, which is what most facial cleansers do. The chemistry principle of “like dissolves like” applies here. Since sebum is a non-polar solvent, it can be dissolved by another non-polar solvent, like oil.
With the mixture of natural oils, you can dissolve the dirty oils mixed with bacteria and dirt that are lodged in your pores. Plus, natural oils are chock full of nutrients that nourish the skin. I was still a little bit skeptical but willing to try the oil cleansing method because I knew I was already worn out from all the chemicals I put into my body and onto my skin.I used this recipe for my oily and combination skin:
2 tbsp. olive oil
1 tbsp. raw organic honey
1 tbsp. jojoba oil
You can also add a couple drops of lavender oil to calm your skin or tea tree oil for its antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. The raw organic honey has antimicrobial properties and many antioxidants. You can also use sunflower oil, castor oil, coconut oil or whatever matches your skin type. I usually make a small batch, because a little goes a long way.
First, use your fingers to scoop some of the oil onto your hands. Blend the mixture with your fingers and massage it onto your face with smooth circular strokes. I massage for 2-3 minutes so that the oil can penetrate into my skin. Then I use a clean washcloth, place it under hot water and wring out the excess water. Place the hot towel on your face to open up the pores and wipe away impurities. I usually rinse my towel and apply it on my face again because it feels luxurious. Then I leave the remaining oils on my face as a moisturizer and rub once more on the areas that need special attention.
This oil cleansing method is very effective for me. I wake up the next day with my skin feeling smooth and appearing less inflamed. It also helps eliminate the flakiness on the sides of my nose and cheeks. I love this method and highly recommend you concoct a personal mixture that is suitable for your skin!
