When you get up in the morning and look at yourself in the mirror, what do you see; Puffy eyes, bed hair, and perfect skin? Well, not me! It all started when I was in my early 20’s. I had skin so smooth and clear that people around me were jealous. But then I moved to college! I never had the time to take care of my skin, long nights, stress of coursework, and of course partying. My poor skin couldn’t take all that, and poof, breakouts all over my face. I was horrified! To top it all I could never keep my hands to myself. So I scratched a lot, and that left marks on my face. I started to panic and tried all sorts of things; Cosmetics, creams, facials, peels, etc. Nothing worked.
I went to see a dermatologist. And he prescribed medication for acne. Initially there was some change, but once the course ran through, the acne was back with a vengeance. That is when advice started flowing from everyone. Try this and that. My whole world was upside down. I lost my self esteem, avoided being photographed, and hid every chance a cute guy passed by. This is not how I wanted to live. So I decided to do something about it. I took my grandma’s advice and went all natural.
First thing I did was use turmeric. It is a great antiseptic. I made a paste with turmeric powder and a little water, and applied it to my face. The turmeric makes your skin feel warm. But once it dries wash it off with some warm water. The turmeric helps bring out the bacteria of active acne to the surface. Daily application reduces the number of acne breakouts. The only side affect is you may have pale yellow colour skin till you wash your face next, which is not so bad. This is a long process and takes time to see the results. Whenever my patience ran out, the acne would be back. But I started to notice that they breakouts where not so regular.
Another home remedy is Mint leaves. Mint leaves have astringent properties. Make a paste with a few mint leaves and apply it all over your face. It may sting a little if you have open acne pores. Wash with warm water after the pack dries. You will see a glow, just like when you use turmeric.
Juice from raw potatoes is good to reduce the marks on your face left by acne. Grate a piece of raw potato and squeeze out the juice. Apply all over your face and let it dry. Wash with warm water.
Many of these tips are easy to do but take a while to see the results. But if you are someone who doesn’t like to use chemicals on their skin, then these natural remedies may help you. Struggling with bad skin can be very disheartening. But taking care of yourself is the key. Eating right and exercising can make a huge difference on how your skin looks and feels. So keep the faith and love yourself.
