I got my first blackhead when I was 6 and started getting acne when I was around 11, so you could say I have some experience with acne. I remember going into the 7th grade with a few pimples that seemed huge, so I went on a hunt for some foundation to cover it.
Me and my mom went to the drugstore and, naturally, we reached for the thing that seemed the most appropriate: Neutrogena SkinClearing Foundation. Worst mistake! After a couple weeks, I started to notice my acne getting worse… these little tiny bumps were popping up all over my forehead and chin and cheeks! My mom attributed it to puberty and I the same.
I tried Proactiv, benzoyl peroxide, harsh cleansers, and just about anything I could find that I thought might work, but they never got better. The worst part was nobody seemed to have an answer for me! I sifted through pages and pages of information, videos, and blog posts only to be left with nothing.
Then, one day, I read about these suckers called parabens! They talked about how they clogged pores and were overall bad for your health, so I checked the ingredients in my foundation and there they were: methylparabel, propylparaben, and butylparaben.
Here’s the part that confused me: the foundation said “noncomedogenic”, so why were my pores getting clogged? To be quite honest, I really had no idea and still to this day have no idea why my skin reacts the way it does to parabens in foundation, but it does. I immediately found a paraben-free alternative, and with some time and exfoliation, the little bumps went away! I haven’t used a foundation with parabens since and I always make sure to ask or double check ingredients.
If you have this problem, maybe the problem is your foundation! It could help to switch out your foundation for something more natural or at least minus the parabens. One drugstore foundation that I really like is the L’Oreal Infallible 24 Hour Foundation. It’s paraben free and extremely matte, so for you oily guys and gals, it’s great! It also doesn’t break me out or clog my pores which is extremely important for me. Skin care is really important but we also have to be really careful about what we put on our faces so we don’t undo all the hard work we put in!
