When I first got acne at a moderate to a severe level, I was at a loss how to do my makeup and cover it. The redness of the spots came through my foundation and my face looked lumpy and I just wanted to hide and not show my face outside.
I looked through tutorials on blogs and Youtube to find tips which would help me out. I have now found a makeup routine which works for me in covering up blemishes and marks.
First of all, I use a primer before putting on any makeup because this helps to target some problems before putting on you make up. For example, some primers reduce redness, some minimize the appearance of pores etc. It also helps to keep your makeup in place for longer.
Secondly, though it feels like the opposite of what you want to do because you want to cover your face as much as physically possible to stop any signs of your acne showing through, I personally now use a BB cream instead of a foundation, which offers a lighter coverage. The reason I choose to use a BB cream is because it actually draws away from rather than highlighting any blemishes on the skin because your face does not look caked in make-up and thus you do not get a crusty cake face effect.
Further, BB creams also contain beneficial ingredients for the skin thus you are treating your skin, as well as covering blemishes. Your skin is able to breathe through the BB cream and pores do not become blocked as easily. I personally use Maybelline Dream Pure BB 8-in-1 BB Cream for Oily Skin. This formula contains 2% Salicylic Acid which helps to fight breakouts. So it covers blemishes and fights against them. It gives your skin a nice texture and looks natural.
I follow this with a concealer to fully hide any blemishes and marks that I do not wish to be seen. A liquid concealer is best for blemishes. This allows you to cover any redness which the BB cream/foundation does not cover.
After this, I use a matte powder and using a brush sweep it over my face to mattify any oiliness and to help my makeup stay in place for longer.
Once I have done this I apply my blusher, mascara, and eyebrows.
I have found that this is the best way to cover my acne without looking cakey and fake. It subtly hides blemishes and makes your skin glow.
