I’ve been through it and if you’re reading this you might have been through it: acne. I think it is safe to say that for me, it had the largest effect on not just my mental health but my physical health.

My acne had gotten so bad to the point where I refused to leave the house apart from for school. I wasn’t active; I was more or less always inside hiding away from everyone and everything because of my skin. Even now that I am acne free, the scars haunt me about the traumatic experience I had having acne, the weight gain from not leaving the house, all of it. I’ve managed to stay acne free for 4 months now.

Three of the many tips that I owe my success to:

1. Pillow Cases

For the last 6 months at the very least, I have been sleeping on silk pillowcases and changing my case every 4 days. Silk pillow cases reduce the friction on your face meaning that when you move around in your sleep, your face will glide over the pillow rather than drag over. This means that your skin is likely to get dry because the silk will not absorb moisturizers like cotton does. There’s also an added bonus for your hair! By sleeping on a silk pillowcase you aren’t only reducing the friction on your face but also your precious strands of hair. I’m a curly girl and I can say that these have truly helped my face and hair dramatically! I can style my hair the night before and feel confident to wake up with my hair intact!

2. Makeup

I’d be a hypocrite if I said ‘don’t wear makeup’ and makeup isn’t a bad thing! It can be, however, if you wear it at the wrong time. Always apply makeup to a cleansed, moisturized face. Make sure the brushes you use (or your hands) are completely clean. Also if possible avoid rubbing the face aggressively when applying makeup because this can cause irritation to the skin. Make sure that you remove all makeup before going to sleep with either makeup wipes or micellar water. After this, make sure that you cleanse your face and décolleté with a good cleanser (my personal favorite is the Bioré charcoal face wash). Also, try to make sure that your face is makeup free when you’re working out and wash your face after you have finished. It’s always a good idea to carry a pack of small makeup wipes or some micellar water and cotton pads in your handbag.

3. Water

Ever since I have made a conscious effort to drink at least 1.5l of water throughout the day, I have seen a change in my skin. Overall, I feel as if I have a healthy glow and on top of that I feel a lot more energized. Because I exercise a lot, naturally I drink more water but if you know that you don’t exercise an awful lot then you should consider monitoring and improving your water intake. If you find drinking water hard or you forget, perhaps you could try to drink water at meal times and with every snack, carry water with you in your bag every day and eat more water-rich foods!
