As someone who has an oily, acne-prone skin type, chest and back acne are inevitable. Furthermore, as someone who lives in Georgia, where the summer months bring a hot, humid climate, chest and back acne are unavoidable (as acne can be caused by sweat). It was with the lucky combination of these two factors that I found myself with not only an awful case of face acne but also with a smattering of chest and back acne. I was absolutely mortified, and I immediately ran to the Internet to find a cure for my chest and back acne. What I found wasn’t necessarily a cure towards it, but ways to prevent it that (with time) were able to reduce my chest and back acne to a few scars. Here are some of the tips I found that helped significantly:
Shower Immediately After Exercising
The main cause of chest and back acne is sweat, which brings toxins to the surface of the skin and allows pores to be easily clogged. Wearing tight exercise clothes locks heat and moisture against the skin, which can aggravate it as well as block pores. After exercising, I used to sit in my workout clothes for a while before showering; little did I know, this was only worsening my chest and back acne. Now, I make sure to shower immediately after exercising, and I’ve seen a huge improvement in my skin.
Wear Less Tight Clothing
Tight clothing that chafes the skin can irritate acne and make it worse. Also, tight clothing that isn’t made out of breathable material can smother the skin, causing the formation of new acne. I made sure to wear breathable workout clothes and looser shirts to allow my skin to breathe, and I noticed that my skin looked less aggravated.
Don’t Shower with Hot Water
A big mistake that I made was showering with hot water. Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils, causing it to become dry and irritated. When the skin on the chest and back gets dry, it produces too much oil in an attempt to rehydrate the skin. And when there is an excess of oil, pores have a much higher chance of getting clogged. To avoid this problem, shower with warm water in order to go easier on the skin. Using a mild cleanser on the chest and back can also help reduce skin irritation while still keeping the skin clean. Making this last change was the final push that my skin needed to stave off my chest and back acne.
By correcting these small mistakes I was making towards my skin, I was able to seriously reduce the amount of chest and back acne I had. Hopefully, these tips will work for you as remarkably as they did for me.
