After years of trial and error, I have come to a solid everyday makeup routine for covering my acne scars while making sure my makeup stays on throughout the whole day.
First, I always make sure I prep my face with skincare. I never wash my face in the morning. I only rinse it with lukewarm water to prevent stripping my skin of its natural oils. To wipe off any dirt or sweat that I’ve acquired overnight, I simply take a cotton round and apply my favorite alcohol-free toner and swipe it across my face. Then, I apply an oil-free moisturizer.
And one a week, I always exfoliate my face. This helps with getting dead, flaky skin off of your face so you have a clean canvas for makeup application. Applying concealer or foundation over dry areas of the skin will emphasize the flaky texture even further. So make sure you exfoliate as you usually do!
Now on with the makeup! First, I don’t apply makeup primer like most people say you should do. I find that most makeup primers clog my pores or ever worse, cause me to breakout. I go straight to applying my favorite foundation. The foundation I currently use is Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Foundation with SPF 15. The coverage of this foundation is on the heavier side, but it doesn’t look cake-y if you use the correct brush and blend well. I usually blend it with a Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. This gives me an even complexion while covering most of my acne scars. For the really bad acne scars I have, I take a little drop of the foundation and pat it directly over the area to get a more condensed coverage of the acne scar. What I like about this foundation is that it goes on matte; which is perfect for oily skin.
To further the wear of my foundation, I use Urban Decay’s All-Nighter Setting Spray. This baby seriously keeps my makeup in place the whole day! Definitely one of my holy grail products. At my college graduation, my face looked exactly the same from morning to late afternoon. I then had to touch up just a bit later on in the night but not as much as I would have if I didn’t use this setting spray!
