If you haven’t heard yet, rubbing snail secretions on your skin is the it-thing. That’s right, I said snail secretions. Slime, snot, secretions, mucin- they're all one in the same. Sound disgusting? Well, that’s because it partially is. But- people are obsessed with the results. Brighter, even skin-tone, decreased hyperpigmentation and scarring, less wrinkles; and with these proven benefits I don’t see anyone stopping anytime soon. In fact, snail mucin has grown an almost cult-like following in K-beauty skincare; so much so that there are designated Snail Spas. “Can I get a side of extra snail slime slathered on my skin please?”
So- what do we do when we hear of a crazy, whacky, totally off the wall skincare trend? Test it out for ourselves of course. I was just as equally intrigued as I was disgusted when I heard of snail secretions, but I wasn’t about to just blindly rub snail snot on my face. I did my due diligence and researched the proven benefits (if there were actually any) first.
Turns out, snail mucin is actually amazing at strengthening the skins barrier, healing cuts, and protecting against bacteria. It’s also rich in proteins, hyaluronic, anti-microbials, and copper peptides, which helps to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. This could possibly be why people see huge anti-aging benefits, like a reduction of wrinkles and quicker fading of acne scarring.
As far as products go- there's everything from essence infused sheet masks to creams, serums, ampoules, and everything in-between that you can imagine. After a few long hours of scowling the internet, I decided upon the Cosrx 96 Snail Mucin for the sheer fact that it contains a large amount of snail mucus (96% to be exact) and the thousands of raving reviews where people claim it’s helped everything from wrinkles to acne.
Initial Thoughts about the Essence:
I’ve tried a number of essences in my life, but never have I tried one with the texture of snail mucus. Be prepared y’all, because it’s a sticky situation. Seriously, I don’t see how anyone could use this essence during the daytime due to the feeling and texture it leaves behind is a bit strange- but it can seamlessly blend into any night time routine.
For some reason, I expected snail mucus to have an off-putting smell, I don’t know- maybe because its literally slime? Luckily, the Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence didn’t have a scent. If anything, it has a slightly fresh smell. The easy pump bottle on this product is perfect, leaving little to no mess behind. I’m also a fan of the see-through design, making it easy to tell exactly how much product is left and when you need a refill.
Of course, one of the most important aspects (if not the most important) is the price. Surprisingly, compared to most other serums, essences, and ampoules, the Cosrx 96 Snail Mucin is seriously cheap. At $19 for 100mL you’re definitely getting the most bang for your buck in comparison to other serums that promise the same results.
My Experience with The Essence:
So, did the snail mucin live up to the hype? I rubbed it on my face every single night for a week in hopes to find out the truth. Was it really anti-aging? Would it help with pigmentation and scarring? Or was it just another over-hyped trend that would surely die out within a few years?
Honestly, I hope this trend lives on forever because this stuff works. Like really, really, works. Typically, it takes me at least a few months to see results from a product but after the first day of using this essence I totally saw a difference in my skin. The biggest thing it changed for me? My hyperpigmentation. I’ve tried it all. Vitamin c serums, SPF, hyaluronic acid, AHA’s and BHA’s galore- but alas, nothing seems to work quicker than, you guessed it, snail mucus.
The first day I noticed that a hyperpigmentation spot under my eye, which had been on my skin for literally weeks, had not only decreased in size but also changed colors from a dark purple red to a lighter pink. It was fading! And fast. Over the next few nights I applied the essence to my face and watched almost all of my hyperpigmentation fade. I’ve never seen a product work so fast, it was almost like some sort skincare witch craft voodoo.
By the end of my 7-day trial of applying the essence daily, I saw serious results. My hyperpigmentation was mostly faded, my skin appeared plumper, more hydrated, and my scars appeared less visible. It didn’t cause new acne plus it helped fade my old scars. My skin virtually looks spotless at this point, something I never thought I'd be able to say. At this point it feels like a very permanent part of my routine and I don’t see myself ever going without it. Now, I not only understand the snail mucin obsession but am proudly a part of it.
