Many of you know that diet can make a large impact on how your skin looks but what many articles fail to tell you are what to eat and just focus on what not to eat. Most readers will find themselves; including myself at one point, lost and left with no foods to eat considering most people tell you to eliminate things that have been engrained in our everyday diet. My goal today is to get you thinking and give some options as well as general guidelines to follow.
First things first, when modifying your diet to improve your skin, absolutely eliminate any sort of processed food with plenty of sugars. This involves soda, commercial baked goods, and pretty much everything you see in your pastries section of every supermarket.
Fruit juice is quite controversial and there are some exceptions however, I would personally steer clear from all juices packaged in a carton or bottle. Also, remove starchy foods from your diet as they can cause a spike in your blood sugar. These foods include everything high in sugar such as the ones above and also potatoes, corn, yams, squash, and anything in the same ballpark as those mentioned. Starchy foods also include flour, bread, and anything that has to do with it. Furthermore, avoid any type of processed meat such as hot dogs, bacon, and any other mystery meat that you may find. Be sure to also remove any unhealthy oils such as canola or vegetable oil.
Now that I’ve given a VERY general idea of what to avoid I will now provide alternatives as to what to eat. To replace your daily soda, I suggest water, which you should be drinking anyway. If you find yourself tired, drink some green tea as it does have some caffeine as well as healthy antioxidants proven to regulate healthy skin function. If you like teas, also try peppermint, cinnamon, and ginger tea.
To satisfy that sweet tooth, munch on some fruits which include pretty much all berries. However, be careful with fruits because some are very sugary and can cause a blood spike so eat them in moderation; berries in general are safe to eat and very good for the skin. I also recommend eating plenty of vegetables such as lettuce, kale, celery, and any green really as they are jam packed with nutrients and vitamins.
If for the life of you cannot stomach vegetables, I recommend starting with baby kale and spinach because of their very mild flavor. Also include healthy fibers into your diet such as nuts including almonds, hazelnuts, pecans and grains such as buckwheat and quinoa. Including fiber in your diet helps regulate a healthy digestive system which is where the majority of our immune system is. For all you meat lovers, incorporate fish, beef, turkey, and eggs as long as they are raw and organic and not processed or in cans.
For all you cooks and bakers, cook with healthy oils such as olive oil and coconut oil. As an alternative to all-purpose flour, use coconut, quinoa, buckwheat, quinoa, and almond flour for delicious goods from pancakes to cakes. These flours are filled with protein and fiber so it’s really good for you. If you want a little sweetness, then compromise with some stevia as opposed to traditional sugar, however, I would always steer clear from anything sugary. For all you dairy lovers, cut cheese in moderation, and stick to milk such as almond or coconut and pretty much anything soy and dairy free.
So there you have it. It’s a lot to take in but if you do a little searching, there is a diet for everyone out there. However, I always found that diets should not be restrictive and if there is something you really love to eat such as chocolate, then I suggest you take a day and eat it in moderation. Remember to have fun because when I tried to change my diet it was interesting to see how much I was missing out on and also how my skin improved by changing my diet.
