You may have heard the term BB cream or CC cream floating around the beauty market. These cosmetic products often claim to even out complexion, hide blemishes, provide anti-aging benefits, and sometimes even treat acne. For something that was too good to be true, I went ahead and did my research, and here’s what I found.
BB creams originally started out in Germany but later gained significant popularity in the Asian markets and started marketing the cream as a Blemish Balm. The term “blemish” is different in Asia and refers to any type of discoloration on the skin where as in America, it refers to a pimple or any type of the sort. Eventually, the product would reach American markets coined with the term, BB Cream.
So what are BB creams? Essentially, they are tinted moisturizers that provide sunscreen protection with texture a little less thick than a liquid foundation, although some may vary in thickness and texture according to different companies and formulations.
The main difference that Asian brands have is that their textures is a lot thicker and have more titanium dioxide for sun protection and can thus leave a white cast on the skin. Other than that, American BB creams are nearly identical to tinted moisturizers in that they provide sheer to light coverage and may provide some type of sun protection.
Additionally, you may hear that these creams provide anti-acne benefits as well as provide skin lightening benefits. The truth is, some may be able to provide additional skin care benefits such as claimed but often times, stick to conventional acne treatment options such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid or anything of the sort that you prefer.
CC creams stand for color correcting and are often no different than BB creams. All things considered, these terms are simply marketing strategies and are used to catch the consumer’s attention.
In conclusion, do you need a BB cream? Well that’s all up to you. They provide sheer to light coverage that may help diffuse minor flaws. For me, as a guy, these creams help even out my complexion and provide light coverage while looking natural, which is very important for guys. I use NARS tinted moisturizer and provides decent coverage but choose what fits you best. In another article, I will discuss how to cover acne with makeup in the safest way possible.
