Sensitive skin is very difficult to treat and deal with, as everything seems to irritate it. I always take a deep breath when someone approaches me with a skin condition rooted in sensitive/sensitized skin.
We must tread lightly, it feels, and any wrong step can set us back.
But knowing where to look, and what ingredients to look for, can help.
Antioxidants
They help to neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation in the skin.
Avena Sativa (Oat) Extract
Known to relieve the skin from itching and irritation. Great for reducing inflammation.
Azulene
Derived from Chamomile, Azulene is a wonderful soothing ingredient for sensitive skin.
Beta Glucan
A powerful anti-inflammatory, derived from either yeast or oats. It is excellent for reducing redness and other signs of sensitivity on the skin.
Bisabolol
This ingredient is a component of Chamomile, and acts as a skin soother. Bisabolol also provides relief from inflammation which can lead to sensitivity.
Comfrey
This herb contains an extract known as Allantoin which is rich in mucilage, which brings both moisturising and soothing relief to a dehydrated, inflamed skin. It's great for speeding up the process of new tissue.
Witzh Hazel/Hamamelis Extract
Witch hazel can be very soothing, making it perfect inflamed skin.
Sea buckthorn Extract
This extract brings skin back to a normal level of sensitivity. It has also been found to be effective in relieving skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis.
N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG)
Glucosamine is one of the building blocks of skin tissue. It is also a skin-identical ingredient, due to its components of amino acid sugar, hyaluronic acid and mucopolysaccharides. It repairs skin from UV damage and heals wounds.
Panthenol
Panthenol promotes epithelisation of the skin's tissues, repairing and rebuilding a damaged barrier.
Red Hogweed Extract
This renews skin cells helping to restore tissue integrity. It blocks the inflammatory pathway that helps reduce nerve response, reducing sensitivity associated with inflammation.
Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate
An extract from Liquorice, that has wonderful anti-inflammatory properties.
Wild cherry bark extract
A moisturising, calming and soothing extract, perfect for sensitive skin.
