Facial Oils and Their Benefits

It is important to note that acne scars are the results of damaged pores and skin tissue after acne. The level of scarring can depend on genetics, and the severity of the acne. You may be wondering if there are any face oils or essential oils that help reduce acne scars, and you can bet that there are!

Facial beauty oils are big in the world of skincare and have been for many years. They're completely natural and plant derived and can be extremely potent.

Here are the best facial oils for acne scars:

  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Helichrysum Essential Oil
  • Frankincesnse essential oil
  • Carrot seed essential oil
  • Neroli essential oil
  • jojoba oil
  • squalene oil

With essential oils, it's best to always dilute them in a carrier oil to prevent skin irritation.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea tree oil helps heal wounds so it can prevent acne, while preventing acne scars and healing them faster.

The antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of tea tree oil can benefit acne prone skin.

Make sure pure tea tree essential oil is not applied directly to skin and diluted in a carrier oil.

Lavender Oil

Lavender Essential Oil can prevent scarring by promoting tissue growth. It has antioxidant, and antiseptic components

A study shows that that lavender oil promotes healing by increasing collagen and regenerating tissue during the early phase of treatment. The topical application of lavender oil can increase the speed of wound healing too making it one of the best oils for acne scars.

Lavender can provide results on scars in as little as one week, but make sure you patch test it in case your skin is sensitive to lavender oil.

Helichrysum Essential Oil

Helichrysum essential oil form is known to treat acne scars and can create smooth skin. It has anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial properties to promote skin healing.

It also has antioxidant properties to prevent acne scars by helping skin create new cells while preventing damage from free radicals. This oil calms skin rashes,  and increases collagen production.

"Helichrysum and immortelle are my favorite oils for acne scars," says Susan Griffin-Black—an essential oil expert. "Their replenishing properties support skin regeneration and promote smoother skin. Rose and lavender are also excellent for scars."

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense essential oil improves the tone and texture of skin instantly while also adding moisture to the skin. It also helps promote new skin cells, reduce the appearance of scars and tightens the skin. Its boswellic acid content has anti-inflammatory properties.

Frankincense oil may cause some skin issues or abdominal issues and it's recommended not to be used if you are taking blood thinners.

Carrot Seed Essential Oil

Carrot seed oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties to reduce acne scars and it can be effective for older scars.

Carrot seed oil can take a month of use before any results can be seen.

Neroli Essential Oil

Neroli Oil is great if you have both acne and acne scars.  Not only is neroli oil good for acne scars, it has pain and inflammation reducing properties to help treat and prevent acne.  It is both anti microbial, anti-fungal, and high in antioxidants making it a very promising oil for acne scars.

As with the other essential oils, dilute it and patch test on skin to make sure you aren't sensitive to this essential oil.

How To Use Essential Oils

Essential Oils can be very potent and possibly irritating to skin.  Never apply a pure essential oil directly to the skin undiluted to avoid irritation.  If the mixture burns, or you notice increased redness, the essential oil may be too concentrated or your skin could be sensitive to that particular essential oil.

Carrier Oils For Acne Scars

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil can be used as a carrier oil for essential oils.  Grapeseed oil is considered a dry and astringent oil. It can tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of pores,  and its anti-inflammatory properties help to treat existing acne, this one's practically made for people with acne prone skin! It's also high in antioxidants and contains linoleic acid, which is excellent for promoting clearer skin.

Jojoba Oil

Well, technically, it is not an oil but a wax ester. However, it's the most similar to human skin oil (sebum) than any other compound. Jojoba oil makes it great to combat oily skin as when applied, it, to put it simply, 'tricks' the skin into thinking it has produced enough oil, thus balancing out sebum production. It's high in vitamin E and is also non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog pores and cause breakouts. Overall this is one of the safest oils for all skin types to use as a natural moisturizer and to help acne scars heal.

Squalene Oil

Squalane is considered as a skin barrier that helps to protect the skin and prevent losing moisture. It is also helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, and acne scars.

“Squalane is really important because it can greatly help reduce spots and acne scars since it’s essentially a composite of your own skin,” says eco skincare creator and expert Indie Lee. Our bodies naturally produce squalane into our twenties, explains Lee, but once that production slows, fine lines start appearing.

The most annoying thing about acne scars is waiting for them to disappear. These essential oils have some of the effective acne-fighting ingredients that will also help in lightening dark spots and acne scars naturally. Let us know which option works best for you!
