Bone broth isn’t anything new, in fact it’s been around for thousands of years. There’s a reason why we’re always told to eat chicken noodle soup when feeling under the weather, bone broth is extremely healing and nourishing to our bodies providing us with glycine, gelatin, calcium, protein, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin D, potassium, zinc, manganese, copper, boron, iron, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, and B vitamins just to name a few.
The bone broth trend has been booming lately, with claims of people healing their guts all the way to clearing up their skin- it tends to be a “miracle cure” for a variety of different ailments. Luckily, bone broth is super easy to make and (if the bones are left out) you can also make a vegan/veggie broth with most of the same healing benefits!
How is it made?
Virtually every bone broth is built on the same foundation: water, meat (or bones), vegetables, and seasoning. The bones are typically first roasted to improve the overall flavor of the bone broth and then they are simmered for a very long time, usually anywhere from 8 hours to more than 24. The purpose of bone broth is to produce gelatin from the collagen filled joints and release trace minerals from the bones. These vitamins and minerals are what give the bone broth it’s amazing healing and regenerative properties.

Benefits of bone broth
From a strengthened immune system to glowing skin, here are five major health benefits of bone broth that’ll make you want to jump on this trend right away.
1- Heal your gut: Perhaps the most well known (and some would arguable say number one benefit) to drinking bone broth is healing your gut. A cup of bone broth daily can heal and seal leaky gut AND protect those tummies without leaky gut. The gelatin in the bones is said to plug up holes in intestines and restore the gut lining. Overtime, with an improved gut research has shown bone broth can be used to heal food allergies or intolerances (specifically to dairy and wheat) and improve overall probiotic count in the stomach. Bone broth stock is easy to digest and soothing to your system, allowing you to fully break down and absorb all of the trace minerals and nutrients.
2- Protect your joints: Bone Broth is one of the best sources of natural collagen! After we turn 20, we experience a 1% decrease in collagen every year, why is this important? Well, as we get older we begin to feel these signs of wear and tear, collagen helps to rebuild our skin, joints, and bones. As bone broth cooks, the collagen from the bones leaches into the broth and becomes readily absorbable. The gelatin in the broth also gives us the necessary building blocks to maintain strong joints and bones.
3- Look younger: Collagen is imperative for maintaining young, wrinkle free- blemish free radiant af skin. Collagen is believed to reduce visible signs of wrinkles, decrease facial puffiness, and fight other signs of aging (skin spots, discoloration, etc.) . Supplementing collagen can help the body improve its own processes over time and naturally produce more of its own collagen. Drinking just a cup of bone broth a day has shown significant results in regards to decreasing wrinkles and cellulite.
Dr Axe. Com found, “ Double-blind, placebo-controlled studies investigating the age-defending properties of collagen have found that 2.5–5 grams of collagen hydrolysate (CH) used among women aged 35–55 once daily for eight weeks supports skin elasticity, skin moisture, transepidermal water loss (dryness) and skin roughness. At the end of only four weeks, those using collagen showed a statistically significant improvement in comparison to those using a placebo with regard to skin moisture and skin evaporation, plus noticeable decreases in signs of accelerated aging, all with little to no side effects.”
4- Sleep better: Research has shown that glycine, an amino acid found in bone broth, is helpful at improving sleep and warding off chronic fatigue. Glycine improves overall sleep quality and helps those who have trouble sleeping fall asleep faster. You can read more about that study here!
5- Protect your immune system: One of the best parts of bone broth again, is it’s gut supportive benefits. By improving the gut, there is a holistic effect on the human body which works to support a healthy immune system. This is mostly due to leaky gut. Leaky gut is a problem where there are basically tiny holes in your gut that allow micro particles of food to travel through and slip into the blood stream. The immune system becomes hyper active, attacking these food particles and showing a hyper inflamed response all over the body (seen as acne, IBS, chronic fatigue etc.). As bone broth works to heal and seal the gut, it supports immune system function and a healthy inflammation response as well.
