Six Antioxidants You Can Find at Home

by: Kristina

Antioxidants are substances that prevent oxidation. Simply put, they are the agents that fight against the adverse effects of free radicals in our body. While the human body is capable of producing antioxidants by itself, the level of antioxidants required to fight off diseases is a lot more. Apart from the food we consume, there are several other ways to increase the antioxidants in our body. Here are six antioxidants that you can find at home and how they help you:

1. Berries

Blueberries, strawberries, and cranberries are some of the berries that contain high levels of antioxidants. Mulberries supply a large quantity of potassium to the diet. They boost bone density and reduce the chances of heart diseases.

2.Dark chocolate

While unprocessed cocoa contains a lot of antioxidants, a slab of dark chocolate has wonderful medicinal benefits too. Studies show that it helps lower LDL cholesterol and reduces the risk of diabetes, asthma, lung cancer etc. A study led by a Penn State University professor, Penny Kris-Etherton, shows that people who consume a diet rich in cocoa have good HDL cholesterol that is 4% more than others.

3. Herbs

Herbs like Cinnamon, Oregano, Thyme, Parsley, and Turmeric are also measured to have good ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, i.e the total antioxidant capacity) The antioxidant levels of some of these herbs is a lot more than those found in fruits such as orange, apple, blueberries etc. So in addition to increasing the taste value of a dish, herbs also provide health benefits.

4.Tea

The Camellia Sinensis is the tea plant that is used to make Oolong tea, Black tea and Green tea. All of these are high in antioxidant levels and help detoxify the body. They contain properties that block the effects of chemicals and DNA damage. The detoxification, resulted from regular intake of tea, is extremely rewarding in terms of complexion. Countries, with a norm of incorporating tea in their everyday life, are known to report less of liver and cardiovascular diseases.

5. Face Masks

Look for as many colorful ingredients as you can. Antioxidants give color to the fruits. So different colored fruits are rich in different antioxidants. Prepare a Kiwi Face Mask or a Strawberry Face Mask. Not only do these face masks provide great results in terms of a glowing skin, but they also prevent damage and slow the aging process. You can even make body scrubs.

6. Maple Syrup

In contrast to white sugar and processed sweeteners, maple syrup is relatively natural and full of antioxidants. Researchers have identified anti-inflammatory properties in the antioxidants contained in maple syrup. They are also beneficial in preventing chronic diseases.

Even though all of these elements provide good antioxidants, too much of any one thing is never good. So be sure to use moderate amounts.
