Getting a shining, shimmering splendid feeling on your face and body? Then you might be having oily skin which is a major turn off. But why do we get oily skin by the way? And how do we get rid of oily skin?

 

Oily skin is a big problem not only for teenagers, but also for the majority of adults especially men. Increased androgen hormone is the main culprit of excessive sebum production. During puberty, there is an increased male hormone which triggers the oil glands to produce more sebum. For some people, there is an abnormal production of sebum that results to oily skin and acne breakouts.

 

We get oily skin mainly because of the excess oil or sebum our sebaceous glands produces on our skin. The sebum that we get on our body is the waxy, oily substance which helps in protecting and hydrating our skin. While the sebum may be vital in keeping our skin healthy and hydrated, too much sebum production can bring about the opposite effects which are oily skin, clogged pores and acne.

Different causes of having oily skin have been pointed to genetics, diet, stress or hormonal changes in the body during adolescence. Women are prone to oily skin during menstrual period, pregnancy, or menopausal stage. Moreover, some findings say that taking birth control pills can also trigger excessive oil production. Oily skin may also be caused by stress, taking a bath using a hot shower which strips your skin of natural oils, or even having a poor diet. 

 

So, how to get rid of oily skin? 

 

Oily skin may be tough to prevent but practicing consistent skin care and avoiding junk foods may help in getting rid of them. We may also be tempted to use heavy cosmetics just to cover the effects of oily skin only to worsen the condition we are already in.

While some oily skin causes due to hormonal and genetics can't be changed too much, there are ways to manage and get rid of oily skin topically.

  1. Egg Whites
  2. Lemon Juice
  3. Milk

Egg Whites

 

Believe it or not, egg whites make a good home remedy for getting rid of oily skin (only except when you are allergic to eggs). Egg whites are rich in vitamin A which is proven to effectively tone and tighten up oily skin.

 

Whip one egg white. You can also add a teaspoon of lemon juice for better results. Gently apply the mixture on your face, allow it to dry for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. Do this twice a week.

 

Lemon Juice 

 

Another household product or home remedy that works great for getting rid of oily skin would be lemon juice. Lemon is a citrus fruit high in vitamin C. It works as a strong antioxidant capable of enhancing your beauty, by rejuvenating your skin from within bringing a glow to your face.

 

Prepare one teaspoon of lemon juice and stir it with one-half teaspoon of distilled water. Apply liberally on your face using a cotton ball. Leave it on your face for 10 minutes before washing it off with warm water. You can also apply some oil-free moisturizer afterward. Do this once daily before going to bed.

 

Prepare one tablespoon of lemon juice, one-half tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of evaporated milk. Mix them together. Apply the paste on your face. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. Do this once a day.

 

Milk 

 

Milk works as a cleanser, exfoliator, skin softener, and toner that can make skin healthy and glowing. Milk contains alpha-hydroxy acid that helps exfoliate the skin gently and maintains the skin’s natural pH balance, thus maintaining an oil-free skin.

 

Prepare two or three drops of sandalwood or lavender oil and mix them with two tablespoons of milk. Apply the mixture on your face using a cotton ball. Gently massage the skin for a few minutes to improve blood circulation and leave it on over the night. Wash your face with cold water upon waking up in the morning. Do this daily.

 

Honey

 

Honey works to reduce excess oil on the skin’s surface, minimize large pores and can also prevent wrinkles. It has moisturizing properties that nourish the skin and keep it sufficiently moisturized. In addition, it has natural antiseptic property that prevents acne breakout and oily skin.

 

Gently apply a thin layer of honey on your face, massage the skin and leave it on for 15 minutes. Then wash your face with clean water. Do this twice daily.

 

Tomatoes

 

Tomatoes help dry out oily skin due to their cooling, clarifying and antioxidant properties. It is also high in vitamin C that promotes and nourishes the skin. Moreover, it has natural oil-absorbing contents that help get rid of excess oil.

 

Prepare a sliced tomato and gently roll it on your face. Allow the juice to dry into your skin for at least 15 minutes. Rinse your face with cold water and pat until dry. You can also apply an oil-free moisturizer.

You can also create a face mask by mixing three tablespoons of tomato juice with one tablespoon of honey.

 

Aside from these, there are other home remedies you can use to treat or get rid of oily skin:

Cosmetic Clay

Oatmeal 

 

Aside from the fact that it’s yummy to eat for breakfast, oatmeal helps calm one’s inflamed skin and absorb dead excess oil. It also helps slough off the dead skin cells. Oatmeal is usually ground when it comes to being used as a facial mask.

 

Almonds 

 

Ground almonds both work as exfoliator and absorbent of excess oils and skin impurities.

 

Aloe Vera
