Do you ever find yourself standing in front of the mirror for hours just trying to pick and prod your skin into looking better, but you come to find that you’ve only caused more inflammation to already inflamed areas? If so, you’re not alone! I often catch myself going out of my way to get a glimpse of myself in a mirror. I have been doing this for years without even noticing. I would take many unnecessary trips to the bathroom at work just to take a peek at my skin. Especially when my skin was having a bad day. The trips to the mirror seemed to be harmless at first, but then they became a skin picking war zone! I would find any little blemish to pick at or pop, and this would only make matters work. I thought that picking at my face would actually make it look better and that my make-up would go on more smoothly. I was so wrong!
The mirror was also my first destination when I would get home from work, and my picking during this time was out of control. My skin looked a mess after I would spend about 30 minutes torturing it. The way it looked was so embarrassing that I would not even want to leave the room. I felt ugly, alone, and would go into hiding. Recently, I have been challenging myself to step away from the mirror and spend much less time in front of it. It has definitely been hard as it is a nasty habit that I have formed, but my skin really has benefited from less mirror time. I have a no picking or popping rule unless the pimple clearly needs relief, but other than that my face is a hands-off zone. I have been doing this for about the past month and it is really allowing my skin to heal from previous scars and has even helped prevent new breakouts.
While I still get pimples, they have been going away more quickly! I do still have moments where I stand in front of the mirror and analyze every little blemish on my skin. I may pick for a few minutes until I realize that I am reverting back to my old ways. I simply take a deep breath and walk away. It’s really that simple! If you struggle with picking at your face, I really encourage you step away from the mirror and take the hands off approach to picking. I know that you will see results and you will feel so much better about your skin!
